Ethiopia

The USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project in Ethiopia seeks to ensure the availability of high-quality health commodities through commodity procurement and logistics, systems strengthening technical assistance, and global and local collaboration. GHSC-PSM also works on improving pharmacy services through policy, legislative, and operational-level interventions to ensure appropriate use of medicines, and transparency and accountability in pharmaceuticals management at service delivery points. While the scope of our activities is broad and focuses on overall health system strengthening, emphasis is given to key health priorities of the Ethiopian government: improving maternal and newborn care, improving child health, and reversing prevalence rates of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

Working closely with the Ethiopian government, we oversee procurement, secured storage, and regular distribution of medicines and commodities for USAID/Ethiopia-supported health programs. We also assist the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), Pharmaceuticals Fund and Supply Agency, regional health bureaus, and other government stakeholders to coordinate with other key players in the health supply chain, and help build their capacity to ensure availability, accountability, and proper use of health commodities across the country. 


Key activities in Ethiopia include:
 

• Support Pharmaceuticals Fund and Supply Agency (PFSA) and the Ethiopian Health Insurance Agency in addressing supply chain issues
• Distribute LLINs to the last mile
• Support PFSA in providing HIV/AIDS RTKs and laboratory monitoring commodities to achieve the UNAIDS 90-90-90 treatment targets
• Support the national Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health program through commodities procurement and technical assistance
• Support continuous process improvement, route optimization, and warehouse improvement of PFSA to ensure customer satisfaction
• Work closely with FMOH counterparts to produce and analyze logistics data to monitor supply plans and inform commodity management planning
• Contribute to holistic development of a supply chain workforce, including standardizing curriculum, institutionalizing capacity-building programs, and developing a strategy for human resources

With USAID and Ethiopian government counterparts, GHSC-PSM works closely with other key stakeholders to reduce duplicative efforts and collaborate on future initiatives. Such partners include the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; the World Health Organization; United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF); Population Service International; Pathfinder International; Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Clinton Health Access Initiative; JSI/AIDSFree Generation; Results for Development; HIV/AIDS Twinning Center – American International Health Alliance; academic institutions; and other implementing partners.
