The overall vision of the USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project in Burundi is to strengthen key government institutions and develop sustainable systems for ensured availability and security of vital health commodities for the people of Burundi.

To achieve these goals, GHSC-PSM in Burundi is working closely with local partners and other stakeholders to:
 

  • Improve strategic planning for supply chain management and commodity security
  • Enhance country logistics, including effective and efficient delivery of health commodities to service sites
  • Implement strategies to transfer skills, knowledge, and technology for improved and sustained performance of the Burundian workforce
  • Strengthen enabling environments to improve supply chain performance
  • Increase innovation for strategic management and planning for improved commodity security


Along with the Ministry of Health (MOH), key partners and stakeholders in strategic management and planning for improved commodity security include Centrale d’Achat des Medicaments Essentiels du Burundi (CAMEBU), Direction de la Pharmacie du Medicament et des Laboratoires, Programme National de Sante de la Reproduction, Institut National de Sante Publique, Programme National de Lutte contre le Paludisme, and Programme National de Lutte contre le Sida.

Key activities in Burundi include:
 

  • Support the MOH in tracking and monitoring national supply plans and creating a lab standardization and harmonization plan
  • Support CAMEBU in identifying best practices and opportunities for increased internal coordination for improved warehouse efficiency
  • Support MOH and CAMEBU staff development by providing formal training, ongoing support, on-the-job learning, and supportive supervision in quantification and supply planning activities
  • Develop a waste management plan for expired and damaged products
  • Distribute LLINs
  • Engage and empower the MOH and CAMEBU in optimizing the warehouse network to gain efficiencies and cost savings
