Country Approach
Body

Unusable medical and pharmaceutical (UMPP) disposal procedures and capacity are not fully developed in Guinea for the treatment and disposal of post-Ebola outbreak UMPP waste. As the health sector in Guinea continues to deal with this issue, the amount of damaged and expired products requiring destruction increases.

Guinea is also a President’s Malaria Initiative focus country where, according to the Ministry of Health, malaria is the primary cause for consultations, hospitalizations, and deaths.

The USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project is working with the Ministry of Health to both strengthen the supply chain for malaria commodities and develop a waste management and reverse logistics strategy for Ebola-related commodities.

Activity Highlights
Body

As GHSC-PSM launched in Guinea in February 2017, most of the upcoming work involves initial program design, building from ongoing discussions on malaria commodity supply chain systems strengthening and the results of a reverse logistics assessment for infection control commodities for Ebola. Key activities include:

  • Consult with USAID, Ministry of Health, and other stakeholders to set the foundation for inclusive program design
  • Evaluate national regulations and regional USAID project documents related to disposal of UMPP
  • Conduct a rapid assessment of the disposal options in Guinea and opportunities to develop sustainable disposal solutions with government partners or as part of a public-private partnership and the possibility of export of UMPP for treatment and disposal. The assessment will involve a data collection team visiting six sites to hold interviews and review stock levels and expiry dates.

Success Stories

Collaboration is one hallmark of a successful development project. It allows for capacity building, knowledge sharing, and improved efficiency in activity implementation. For the USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project, the End Use Verification…
In 2018, Guinea’s Ministry of Health (MOH) demonstrated its commitment to evidence-based decision making for health commodities by initiating the roll-out of a nationwide electronic logistics management information system (eLMIS) for a broad range of health programs. With technical and training…
